Pokémon Report: Drowzee and Hypno.

Drowzee:  Psycho Tapirus hypnopsychosis

Hypno: Psycho Pavor nocturnis

Drowzee are found largely in environments that possess area of deep mud as well as higher grasslands, due to this very particular ideal they are restricted to life in floodplains and are often found living in rice paddies, much to the dismay of their owners. Hypno however is not so fond of damp environments and has a tendency to shift to dense forests upon evolution, although exceptional circumstances have been found where Hypno have resided within dense cities.

The appearance of an average Drowzee if of a 3 foot tall roundish yellow mammal, it possesses short medium density fur that is often bristly to the touch when older. Drowzee also possess a short versatile proboscis extension. This trunk is used when foraging to push aside leaf litter, pull out short sprouts and lift berries into their mouths. Due to its habitat and its preference for water it is often seen with a thick muddy coating over its lower half. Drowzee will spend days lying on their backs in the mud with the only evidence of their lower halves visible being their toes sticking out above the surface.
Hypno appears as a 160cm tall humanoid mammal, with similar short yellow fur that is maintained perfectly clean, the fur is also very fine and shines contrary to its previous evolution. A thick white ruff is also present around the neck of adult Hypno. This mane is larger in males and more centred towards the front in females. Due to the larger stronger arms of Hypno the trunk present on Drowzee is no longer required and remains vestigial within the large nose of Hypno.

Drowzee and Hypno possess a rare ability to consume the dreams of both humans and pokemon. They have therefore been dubbed Oneirovores. They do so by either lulling their prey to sleep with their hypnotic abilities or applying Psychic aided stealth to approach a sleeping target. The way they consume dreams has been a mystery for as long as their diet has been known. However recent studies into the brainwaves of a Drowzee inducing hypnosis shows that they do so in a different way than other hypnotic Pokémon.

Drowzee will focus on the brainwaves of its target, it will then adjust its own to match. Once a perfect match has been established the Drowzee is able to lower its own brainwaves into a sleep state, effectively "dragging" its target's down with it. Drowzee is then able to severe the link before reaching sleep itself, incedently this is also how Drowzee possesses the insomnia ability.

Hypno hypnotises in a similar way but is more "aggressive" about it, the pendant every Hypno endeavours to carry with them is used to suggestively adjust the brainwaves of the target, without altering its own brainwaves at all. The monotonous swing of the pendant as well as the forceful psychic lowering of their brainwaves can easily topple a heavily focussed adult male within 3 seconds, it has been shown that the more intelligent a target is the easier it is for Hypno to force you to sleep.

Once the target has successfully been reduced to sleep the Drowzee/Hypno will continue to adjust the brainwaves of their prey to initiate REM. Once the Pokémon or human has begun to dream the dream eater will allow their own brainwaves to follow the dream, being taken with it. It is by having their own mind taken by the dream of another they will begin to release endorphins, the pleasure hormone. Endorphins have a unique function within the Drowzee line as it is required to initiate metabolic function. These endorphins are combined with the normal digestive enzymes in order to work, beyond this point digestion is normal. When awake, the prey will have no memory of the encounter and no memory of any dreams experienced through the sleep. Research has been conducted into the types of dreams that can be consumed by Drowzee and Hypno, "normal" dreams, those that are unpredictable and sporadic are the most efficiently consumed, the dream eater enjoys the random directions the dream will take and therefore releases more endorphins, curiously however, "Lucid dreams", those where the dreamer is in control, are unable to be consumed by the dream eater. The consciousness of the dreamer will block the attack and effectively prevent the predation occurring, Drowzee has been seen to be completely stumped by a lucid dream and will leave unfed, Hypno however will fight further and adjust the brainwaves to silence the lucidity, and then continue eating.

Other than the well known diet of dreams, the Drowzee line must also consume large amounts of vegetation, ranging from newly sprouted seedlings and herbs through to fruits and root vegetables, Drowzee in particular is easily swayed by a handful or so of freshwater plants such as Anacharis.

Anomalous behaviours have been observed within the Drowzee line, these behaviours are of particular note due to the insight they provide into sleep patterns. Drowzee have been observed to yawn before initiating their regular Hypnotic technique, not only does it help to lower their own brainwaves to drag down the target's, but it prepares the targets to be more easily adjusted. This technique has been classified by the Pokémon league simply as the move Yawn and has since observation been taken and taught to many other Pokémon that can conduct this method of hypnosis. Hypno, as famous for their kind, carry with themselves at all time a small pendant, usually a coin on a string, but it can be anything, pocket watches, yoyos and a spider on a web have all been observed to occur without suggestion. Investigation has been conducted as to whether or not this pendant is necessary for a Hypno to use hypnosis. When placed in solitary with its pendant removed and presented with an aggressive Tauros to hypnotise,, the Hypno in question provided no hesitation in raising a single finger and swaying it too and fro as it does usually and it proved easily as effective as a pendant, effectively immobilising the Tauros within seconds before squatting by its side for an hour or so to feed.

The Drowzee line is largely completely harmless, they tend to stay away from civilisation, with a few exceptions of course, and will generally feed on the dreams of wild Pokémon. There was one case observed where a Hypno lured a young girl away into the forest and held her captive in order to have a continuous source of food, the Hypno provided her with berries and access to water but denied her escape, hypnotising her whenever she attempted. The young girl was rescued by an adventurer and returned to her father in the Sevii islands. Another case was observed where Drowzee and Hypno were being used by their owners to induce sleep upon the sleep deprived members of the Pokémon Lovers Club in HopHopHop town of the Kanto region. A side effect of the large amounts of brainwaves being adjusted in this dense city was the children living in the area began to also have their brainwaves adjusted intentionally by the forceful technique of the Hypno. The effects of these alterations manifested in the children acting as if they were Pokémon, effectively living out the dreams the hypno had stolen from wild Pokémon in the past. The children were all found the city's park, climbing trees, swimming and speaking as if they were Pokémon. The trainer's Drowzee corrected their brainwaves and removed them from this state. Since then this practice was banned within the Kanto region.

Evolution tends to be within the range of level 26 as classified by the Pokémon League. Some occurrences of early evolution have been noted to occur when a Drowzee learns the forceful adjusting technique, however this still can only occur within a few levels of 26.
Reproduction occurs during the dry season in temperate areas, if the parents are Drowzee they will guard their nests that are situated upon built up reed mounds within their swampy habitat. They will lay their eggs communally and the mothers will sit around it with their backs to the eggs in order to secure a perimeter around the nest, any invasion will be swiftly hypnotised and the males will carry off the attacker and allow them to wake up, far away and disoriented.

If the parents are Hypno the eggs will be hidden in a corner, often under roots, dense grass or fallen logs within the forest, or alleyways and abandoned storage rooms within a city, the female will then assume the protective position with her back to the eggs and wait patients for her male to bring both food and sleeping prey for her to feed upon. When the egg is ready to hatch, the pair will migrate to the Drowzee colony from which they originate and allow the egg to hatch amongst the Drowzee and be raised by the female Drowzee there. The Hypno will then return to their home.

Wow...this is actually a really comprehensive report on Drowzee! I've wondered about this line of Pokemon for quite some time!

Still, I actually happen to be in the process of creating Pokemon reports myself (which are kinda long, mind you)! If you have a specific Pokemon you'd like to know about, go ahead and ask away! I will do my best to satisfy your curiosity. ^^
